Susan Campbell Bartoletti was born on November 18, 1958 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Throughout her years as a writer, she is the author of many award winning books. She wrote a Newberry Honor book, Sibert Honor Book, Orbis Pictus Award Honor book, Sydney Taylor Notable, and an ALA best book for young adults. Some other works that Susan wrote include the novels: Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow published in 2005, Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, and Dear America: A Coal Miner's Bride published in 2000. Susan Campbell Bartoletti was moved to write Helmeth Hubener's story while writing Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow and coming across his heroic actions encouraged her to write it in a fictional form.
